Bathers wash on the ghats of the sacred Ganges river. Hindus venerate the Ganges as a goddess, its waters are thought to be purifying. It is estimate that over 1 million people a day bathe or take a "holy dip" in the Ganges while thousands drink the holy water straight from its banks as partially cremated corpses float past them and nearby drains spew some 300 million litres of untreated sewage into the river.
